Wood Fence Maintenance and How To Do It Right

In order to do proper wood fence maintenance, you will need to know what to do and this will not be too much of a challenge. You can get away with metal especially if it is coated with vinyl, but wood is a different story altogether. Anything that can take away from the perceived value of your home and property has to be avoided or fixed. Even if you are not inclined with tools and the like, you really do not need much in the way of tools for fence maintenance.

Periodic Inspections

Create a schedule where you carry out periodic visual inspections of your fence which is particularly important for wood fences because there are too many things that can cause damage. Whatever you do, try and be organized about it, but this is at your discretion. You can record each time you inspect it and write down anything that needs attention, and it is good to have this so you can refer back to it if needed. Probably the most important areas of your fence are the posts and where they enter the ground. One of the greatest risks or threats aside from moisture and rot are termites, and not much needs to be said about them.

Fence Materials

If you want a truly rural-looking fence, then find wooden dowels that are used in place of nails. Ask about the benefits of using non-metallic devices, and sometimes they may last longer and they certainly will not rust. You probably have seen nails that are loosening up and sliding out, and this is very common with nails in wood. Wooden fencing is like all others, and it is helpful to remember that there are idiosyncrasies with all fence materials. After some time you will not be able to save the nail, and it is possible you may have to form new nail holes.

Fence Cleaning

Avoid any general advice about the best way to clean the fence, and you will not want to use anything harsh. Spending an afternoon with this will not be bad, plus this is not a practice that needs to be performed every year. The only exception to this is if the wood is exposed from the stain that should be on it in the first place, and the best way to clean wood fences is with a mixture of water and bleach – very simple. You want to dilute the bleach to about 60% with water, and never apply full-strength bleach to the fence because you can erode and damage any stain that’s on it with full bleach. This is not the only method to get this done, and in that case, you can research alternatives on the net that are effective and may not involve a chemical of any kind. If you want to learn more about wood fencing maintenance methods, then visit your local contractor. Be persistent until you are at a knowledge base level in which you are feeling good about your self. Taking the right type of action will put you in momentum and your fence will be installed that much faster.
